Recommended Cameras   ---   Photography 1

Many people are attracted to photography because they enjoy the challenge of using photographic equipment. Regardless of how expensive, how technically advanced, or how cool looking your camera is, it can't think for you.  It needs you to tell it how you want the picture to look.  It is a tool, like a painter's brush.  Only instead of directing the brush, the photographer directs the camera.  For full artistic expression,  the photographer needs a camera that will let him direct it,  a fully manual camera*.

*A  manual camera is one in which the both the shutter speed and the aperture can be adjusted.

                                                              New and Used Cameras

When shopping for a used camera it is very important that the lens is clear and fungus free, and that the meter, shutter speed, aperture, and focus  are all in working order.  50 mm lenses with foot and depth of field scales are particularly helpful to beginning students, and a camera with a depth of field preview button is always preferred.

Find information in  books, magazines, and web-sites about any models you are considering.

Owner's manuals are particularly helpful with newer, more complicated models.  Depending on the model, owner's manuals can be purchased or down-loaded on line.

Why is a film camera required for the beginning class?

People who want to know everything they can about how cameras work, and to make that knowledge instinct, will find starting with a basic camera the quickest, easiest and most thorough way to learn photography.  Just as you learn to walk before you run, we start the process of learning photography with a simple manual film camera*.

Old or new,  they can be borrowed or purchased very inexpensively.

Using film as our medium, you will have the experience of learning an alternative to digital.   Since all cameras basically work the same, any skills acquired will apply to any camera you may ever use in the future whether 35mm, medium or large format film, video, or digital.

Film is our medium of choice for beginning students too because the nature of working with film makes you slow down and think about what you are doing.  It facilitates the learning process by simplifying it.

If you are a person who is tired of taking a hundred pictures to get a few good ones, or want to be out taking pictures with less time spent behind a computer, you will find our teaching methods very successful regardless of whatever camera you ever choose to use.
