A. S. DEGREE - COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
SUGGESTED COURSE SEQUENCES

This program was designed with extensive input from local employers and computer professionals as a two-year degree program intended to prepare individuals to start a computer-related career in our four-county service area.

The 63 credit Computer Information Technology A.S. Degree consists of courses from the following categories:

  • General Education – 15 credits
  • Departmental Core Courses – 30 credits
  • Departmental Electives – 18 credits (12 of them from a specific recommended lis

Students may choose to (but are not required to) specialize in any of the following areas of focus: Application Software, Internet Services Technology, Networking, or Programming. Students can select their electives from one or more of these specializations to complete their elective credit requirements. Twelve of the elective credits must be selected from a restricted list of “recommended electives”. The remaining six can be from any course with a CEN, CGS, CIS, COP, or CTS prefix.

The primary offerings of each core course will occur in the semester shown in the diagrams that follow (four semester tiers - top to bottom: Fall 1, Spring 1, Fall 2, Spring 2) with secondary offerings in the summer semesters. Courses with major enrollment from other departments may be offered in both fall and spring semesters.

The catalog lists the departmental core courses and all departmental electives (regardless of specialization) and includes text encouraging students to "…consider an area of specialization to enhance their employability" and encouraging them to "look at the semester-by-semester curriculum framework diagrams linked below which show how to focus their program toward such specializations.

*A special cohort-based restricted-schedule offering of the degree will be offered based on the Networking specialization. It will involve a rigid schedule of classes guaranteed to occur on only Monday-Thursday mornings. Some classes from our department will be scheduled in 8 week blocks and carefully sequenced to maximize student success. General Education classes taught by other departments will be molded to focus on our program. This program will be called the “Cyber- Security Institute”. If sufficient enrollment can be generated in this program, the college will guarantee that all classes in the program will run for the two year commitment, even if the enrollment in the cohort dwindles. This guaranteed schedule should promote program completion and assist students in scheduling work opportunities to assist in their education.
