Edge Workgroup

The Exploring Discipline-Grounded Epistemologies (EDGE) Workgroup was formed in September 2005. This workgroup is comprised primarily of faculty representing various disciplines. The group’s main purpose is to address the scholarship of teaching and learning by exploring the epistemologies of specific disciplines, by examining assessment techniques and by developing strategies that engage students in deep learning.

Mission

The mission of the EDGE Workgroup is to consider the scholarship of teaching and learning in order to:

  • Reflect upon and articulate disciplinary epistemologies in order to answer questions about the nature of the discipline and create strategies for developing and nurturing these skills in students
  • Design and implement teaching strategies that develop higher-order thinking skills appropriate in the discipline and create strategies for developing and nurturing these skills in students
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the learning experience by use of assessment techniques that not only evaluate student learning but also evaluate student engagement in the discipline
  • Develop case studies that can be shared through various media
  • Foster a culture of teaching and learning that transcends the utilitarian instructional process

Projects

  • Updated the General Education Learning Outcomes listed in the College Catalog and created an Audit Form to be used in determining whether or not students had met these outcomes.
  • Compiled a list of potential Conceptual Barriers (AKA Sticking Points) in meeting these Learning Outcomes.
  • Created an activity to be used college-wide at the 2007 Professional Enhancement Day asking departments to identify discipline-specific Sticking Points.

Next Project: To compile the results of the Professional Enhancement Day activity and create something that will be useful to all departments.
