About Prof. Hofer--He has a BA in English from Pace College in New York City and both an MA and a PhD in English from Kansas State University.  He has taught English at IRCC since 1990 and before that at several colleges and high schools since 1971.  His scholarly interests are the poetry of the modern period and the tradition of tragedy that reaches back to ancient Greece.  He has recently written and lectured publicly on the poetry of Walt Whitman and William Butler Yeats, and he is himself a published poet.

Prof. Hofer's approach to education in English develops critical reading, thinking, and writing.  He emphasizes for his students the value of choice informed by imagination in refining the spontaneous use of language, and he encourages them to recognize the contribution that value makes to their personal independence, to their professional development, and to their participation in our democratic processes.
