SPEECH DESCRIPTIONS
SPC 1300 Interpersonal Communication
This course is a study of the basic theories of human
communication. It focuses on the
nature of verbal and non-verbal signals, face-to-face communication systems, and
analysis of human interpersonal communication at individual and societal levels.
A special version of this class has been designed for Firefighter/Paramedics. This course explicitly focuses on perceptual differences, listening styles, intercultural communication and crisis communication, all essential skills for first responders. The class has a unit on Verbal First Aid, "What to say when every moment counts." While the course generally covers all the basics of SPC 1300, the learning outcomes require students to know how to use effective communication skills in a very unusual set of circumstances. Role playing, scenario-based learning and reaction papers are all important components of this class.
SPC 1600 Introduction to Speech Communication
This course examines the nature and principles of
speech, with emphasis on improving speaking and listening skills common to all
forms of oral communication through a variety of experiences in public speaking.
This course is currently offered in the traditional format where student attendance is mandatory and in the Internet format where students only come to class to deliver speeches.
As of last year, 2006, SPC1600 is no longer just an elective course. Introduction to Speech Communication can now be used to fulfill three hours of the six hour Humanities General Education requirement.
