My name is Mrs. June Wells, Department Chair. I have been a member of the Communications/ Education Department at IRCC for 33 years. My undergraduate degree is in Speech/English Education and my Master of Art’s Degree is in Rhetoric and Public Address. Both of my degrees were earned at the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! I thoroughly enjoy teaching Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication. In the past year, I developed a course in Interpersonal Communication specifically designed for IRCC Firefighters/Paramedics. The course teaches skills like perception, cultural differences, verbal and nonverbal communication, crisis communication and professional communication. It also includes information on "Verbal First Aid," the kind of communication needed in emergency situations, when every minute counts. This course has been both interesting and challenging for me.
My courses in Public Speaking
continue to excite and reward me. In the last two years, SPC 1600 has
gone from being an elective course to one that can be used to fulfill
three hours of the Humanities General Education requirement. Seeing
students become comfortable in front of audiences is indeed rewarding.
The GOOD NEWS about Public Speaking
is that it is 100% a learned activity.
No one is born a good speaker.
All good public speakers were once bad ones.
Through education and practice, they have developed and improved.
So come aboard and give it a try!
Taking a course in Introduction to
Communications (Public Speaking) or Interpersonal Communications
will benefit you in your educational pursuits and in your future job or
career plans as well. My
commitment is to help you be successful in these courses in any way I
can.
