Teaching Background

I have worked as an instructor for over 10 years. Starting out working as a teaching assistant at

Florida Atlantic University in 1996, I progressed through various stages of teaching including

working as a substitute teacher, middle school teacher, high school teacher,  Middle School advisor for

Educational Talent Search, adjunct instructor at IRCC, and professor at IRCC.

Key Responsibilities

My responsibilities as a teacher are to help students explore their own writing styles and to show them a

way of analyzing their writing and other writers’ works. I am not going to make you write my way.

I will show you techniques and ask you to demonstrate your understanding of them.

Department or workgroup

I am proud to be working at Indian River Community College in the English Department.

How do I contact you in an emergency?

The best way to contact me in an emergency to call my office phone number: 772-336-6245.

If you don’t get me, leave a message including your name, phone number, class meeting times, and message.

If you are trying to get an essay to me out of class, the best way is to email me an attached RTF file

at calvarez@ircc.edu and drop off a copy at the testing and assessment center in my file or at my office.

Where can I find you?

I am usually teaching a class or meeting with students. Check my schedule.

What are your office hours?

At the beginning of the year, I set up office hours and publish a schedule.

Please ask me for a copy or go to the WEB CT class and print one out.

What happens if I miss a class?

You miss all the information from that class period and you are responsible to have it caught up by the next class meeting.

Use your contact list on your syllabus. Call the students and ask them about the notes and the assignments that we covered.

What is the best way to get an “A” in your class?

Come to all of our class meetings, complete all of your assignments and turn them in on time,

understand how to use your rubric and use it to complete your essays, and ask questions if you don’t understand something.

When is the best time to contact you?

Usually, I can be contacted at any time; however, make sure that I am not teaching a class.

I will turn off my phone during class times.
